Due to hot, dry conditions and a heightened fire concern across the state, the City of Steamboat Springs has cancelled the fireworks show scheduled for Wednesday, July 4, 2018. In place of fireworks, a laser show will take place at Howelsen Hill that evening.
Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue, Steamboat Springs Police and city staff reviewed plans, evaluated conditions on Howelsen Hill and Emerald Mountain, and decided that for the safety of participants and volunteers, along with the potential threat of wildfire, the Fourth of July Fireworks show will not take place at this time. The Northwest Colorado area has seen several Red Flag and Fire Weather Warnings, including the one currently in effect, and fire danger has been high to very high for much of the month.
“This decision is never an easy one,” said Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue Chief, Mel Stewart. “With several wildland fires around the state and local conditions showing no improvements in the near future, this was the most prudent course of action and I hope everyone understands.”
With the cancelation of the fireworks show, the city has secure Las Vegas Lasers, a leader in laser technology, to produce a high-impact, high-powered evening laser show at Howelsen Hill. A DJ will kick off the show around 8PM, with the lasers lighting up the night at 9:45PM. The company was in Steamboat Springs last week to test its state-of-the-art lasers. Based on the trial, the best viewing location will be at the base of Howelsen Hill, but the laser show is visible from several other locations with line of sight to the Howelsen Hill jumps.
All other events, outside the fireworks show, associated with the Fourth of July celebration in Steamboat Springs will continue as scheduled. A comprehensive listing of Fourth of July events can be found at www.steamboatchamber.com/july4th.
Remember fireworks that leave the ground, explode or fragment, and similar more powerful fireworks are illegal in Colorado. Without a professional fireworks show, the city asks individuals to not take matters into their own hands and refrain from setting off personal fireworks. Please Respect Vets, Pets & Neighbors.
