The city’s paving program is currently working on Yampa Street starting this morning and running through Wednesday of next week. The paving program tackles fourteen roadways with milling and paving through July across the city as part of a $1 million dollar project.
Contractors are milling, removing the two-inches of existing asphalt on Yampa Street, between 5th and 8th Streets today; before moving to 8th to 12th Streets tomorrow. During milling operations, vehicles are able to pass through the work zone under a flagging protocol. All sidewalks are open to pedestrians.
Starting Monday, May 21, crews will begin paving the entire stretch of Yampa Street. During paving operations, no vehicles are permitted through the work zone and closures of portions of the street will occur. Paving work is scheduled to run from Monday, May 21, through Wednesday, May 23, weather permitting.
The paving project is one of the final components of the three-year Yampa Street Improvement Project. For decades, residents, business owners, and city representatives recognized the need for improved safety, connectivity, and walkability in the downtown core.
In July 2015, City Council authorized moving forward with a three-year Downtown Improvement Plan based upon a specific project list including construction on Yampa and Oak streets and side-streets between 3rd and 12th street. The overall $11 million funding package included certificates of participation, general fund revenue, grants, franchise fee restricted reserves and a private property assessment.
