[ARCHIVED] Early Morning Structure Fire On Rushing Water Lane

SSFR Rushing Water NewsFlash

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-December 9, 2023-Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue (SSFR) was dispatched by Routt County Communications Center (RCCC) at 02:29 AM to Mile Marker 138 on Highway 40 for the report of what appeared to be large flames around Storm Mountain Ranch.

A second reporting party also called with a report of a house on fire around Storm Canyon Trail and Water Song Lane. Lieutenant. Dave Hesselton then asked for the alarm type to be upgraded to a full structure fire.

SSFR arrived on scene at 02:45AM and responded with Engine 6-1, Engine 6-2, Tender 6-4, Ambulance 6-4, Staff 6-1, and Staff 6-2. Oak Fire Protection District provided with mutual aid Water Tender 851.

Upon arrival on scene at 33575 Rushing Water Lane in Engine 6-1, Lt Hesselton reported a very large house fully involved in flames with large portions of the second floor and roof collapsing into the structure. A defensive strategy was immediately put in place to ensure the house propane tanks and surrounding pine trees did not catch on fire. Hoses were deployed from the first arriving engine to keep the fire contained to the house.

During the initial 5 minutes, 2 off duty personnel responding from home, were diverted to a medical call that was paged out at Casey’s Pond.

Fire equipment and staff are currently still on scene. Smoke will continue to be in the area for some time due to the rural nature of the site and limitation on water due to lack of pressurized hydrants.

The cause of the fire is unknown and will be under investigation by Routt County Sheriff’s Office and Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue Fire Marshall.

SSFR would like to thank the following agencies for their assistance Routt County Communications, Routt County Sheriff’s Office, and Oak Creek Fire Protection District.
