[ARCHIVED] Winter Guidelines For Whistler Off-Leash Area Start Nov 1

Off Leash NewsFlash

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-October 25, 2023-With leaves falling fast and colder temperatures signaling snow, seasonal changes are taking place in the Whistler Park off lease area, where segments that were off leash or leashed in summer will switch for winter.

“We need everyone’s help to ensure that all park users, both two- and four-legged get the most out of these areas,” said Community Service Supervisor Krista Amatuzio. “Please be respectful of each other and follow the rules for the area.”

Whistler Park sees the southeast segment of the park, which includes the sports fields, transition to off-leash in winter. In addition, the west (back) water portion of the dog area becomes leash required due to elk winter range and park users must remain on existing trails. The winter requirements in Whistler Park are in effect from November 1 through April 30.

Off leash areas are clearly signed at entry/exit points with a map outlining details. Off leash hours in both dog parks, Rita Valentine & Spring Creek at lower pond, and the three off leash areas (Butcherknife Trail, Sailors Way and Whistler Park) run from one hour after sunrise to one hour before sunset.

Butcherknife also has a leash requirement during school hours, so keep those leashes on when kids are headed to and coming from school.

Please keep in mind that a leash is required for all surrounding trails leading into Off-Leash Areas as well as the parking lots. Being off leash prior to the designated area is a violation of dogs running at large and will be enforced.

Keep your dog on its leash until well within the designated off-leash area and keep it with you in case leashing up is required. When using these areas, voice, and sight control as well as dog waste removal and disposal is required by law. Individuals can report animal complaints to Police Dispatch at 970.879.1144. Additional information and maps highlighting the Dog Parks and Off Leash Areas can be found at steamboatsprings.net/offleash.
