STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-March 3, 2023-Most big cats are often elusive, prowl in the dark hours and are difficult to spot. Unfortunately, the Howelsen Hill Nordic snowcat, which grooms miles of Nordic trails at the historic ski area, has joined this group due to mechanical issues over the past several weeks.
“While we have continued to do our best to do a full groom of the Nordic trail system as scheduled, we no longer have the ability to lay classic track until the groomer is fixed,” said Howelsen Ski & Rodeo Manager Brad Setter. “We appreciate everyone’s patience and will continue to provide updates as available.”
The Nordic snowcat that services the Howelsen Hill Nordic trail system has been down for approximately three weeks. The mechanical issue has significantly impacted the ski area’s ability to set classic track as Nordic skiers may have noticed. While parts have been ordered, they are on backorder with no estimated delivery date and no timetable for repairs.
The ski area has been able to set some classic track with a manual track setter in the rodeo grounds where daily grooming can take place without eliminating the classic track. Additional classic track may be added as conditions and equipment permits.
“We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused,” continued Setter. “If you are a classic Nordic skier and feel you have been adversely impacted by the reduced level of classic track this season, please reach out to us.”
With four Ski Free Sundays remaining, the Howelsen Hill Ski Area closes for the winter season on Sunday, March 26. A daily trail grooming report is available online. Classic Nordic skiers can contact the Howelsen Hill Ticket Office at 970-879-8499 or by email with questions or concern.
