[ARCHIVED] Sutphen Ladder Truck Gifted to North Routt Fire District

Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue (SSFR) is celebrating Valentine’s Day in a unique way by gifting its Sutphen Ladder Truck to the North Routt Fire Protection District. The specialized ladder truck has served the community since 1985 and will see continued service protecting the residents of North Routt.

“This truck has been a tremendous asset to the department and has served the Steamboat Springs community admirably for more than thirty years,” said Deputy Chief Chuck Cerasoli. “While we’ve outgrown its capabilities, we’re happy to see it continue to work and help another department.”

The truck was first purchased new back in 1985 by SSFR and features a mid-mount 75-foot aluminum ladder truck with an “open” cab for the rear facing riders.  Powered by a 445 horsepower Detroit diesel engine and Allison transmission, the truck could seat five firefighters and was cutting-edge back in its day.

While it can’t pump water today, it was able to move 1,500 gallons per minute and had a nozzle on the tip of the ladder able to push 1,000 gallons per minute.

Currently, SSFR has a contract to purchase a new Pierce 110-foot Ascendant Platform vehicle as part of its normal replacement plan. The new truck, expected to be delivered in December 2018, features a state-of-the-art configuration providing 110-feet (33.5m) of vertical reach and 90-feet (27.4m) of horizontal reach without compromising water capacity, performance, or safety.
