Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue (SSFR) was dispatched to 38400 Klein Road to the report of a wildland fire. Updates from Routt County Communication Center (RCCC) included that a hay baler had caught the field and hay on fire encompassing about 5 acres and that it was growing. SSFR initial response included 7 on-duty personnel staffing one Brush Truck, one 2000 gallon Water Tender, Engine 6-1, and Staff 6-1. Upon arrival on scene crews found the field on fire with the wind driving the fire in to the nearby Gamble Oak.

Mutual aid assistance was requested and then provided by Oak Creek Fire Protection District, West Routt Fire Protection District and North Routt Fire Protection District. The neighboring districts provided 9 personnel 3 brush trucks and 1 water tender in addition to 2 off duty SSFR personnel staffing an additional Water Tender. Over several hours crews were able to knock down most of the active flame with water and foam and using a tactic known as back burning (intentionally burning unburned area to create a barrier from further fire growth) contain the fire to an estimated 35-40 acres.

During this time period the remaining 2 on-duty personnel and 3 off duty personnel covered all other calls for the town and District. Fire Crews will be on scene tomorrow to ensure that the fire is out. The cause was man-made and damage was to fences, field and hay bales. For further questions contact Chief Mel Stewart at 970-819-7320. Images attached. For further Images and video visit Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue Facebook site. SSFR would like to the thank the neighboring fire districts, Routt County Sheriff’s Office, and Routt County Communications for their assistance with this fire.
