A City Council subcommittee, comprised of council members Heather Sloop and Robin Crossan along with city staff, is working together with the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club to develop a supplement to the Joint Use Agreement (JUA).
The subcommittee has held 15 meetings in the past year and made significant progress on key topics. As a result of these meetings, both entities have verbally agreed to operate under the current JUA for another year. The JUA forms the framework for the responsibilities between the City of Steamboat Springs and the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club as it relates to Howelsen Hill.
This decision allows the discussion to be focused on the community’s support for Howelsen Hill and its future, including funding ideas and its vision. While the JUA supplement is one element, the collective dialogue going forward will include the ongoing vision and master plan, soil analysis, potential third-party partners and the community as whole.
Residents view Howelsen Hill as a valuable component of the community and preserving the ski area remains one of city council’s primary goals. During the recent 2017 community survey, maintenance and capital improvements for Howelsen Hill were identified by the community (71%) as an important focus area for the city.
With the first presentation of an initial vision plan for the ski area last night, the city is interested in the community’s thoughts, insights and what they envision for the future of Howelsen Hill Ski Area. Please share your thoughts with city council via
email, in person at the Farmers Market or Coffee with Council or with city staff.
