Officers Shane Musgrave and Cody Owens along with other available members of the department will be on hand for this edition of Coffee with a Cop from 8am to 10am at the Steamboat Springs McDonald’s (1150 S. Lincoln Avenue), which is providing complimentary coffee during the event. In addition, a Spanish to English translator will be available at the event.
“Effective policing starts with a strong relationship and trust between the police department and the community it serves,” said Chief Cory Christensen. “Our officers brought forward this idea last year and their enthusiasm continues to fuel their efforts to meet with residents on a regular basis.”
The first Coffee with a Cop event was held in Steamboat Springs on November 11, 2016. The program looks to bring residents and officers together on a quarterly basis throughout the year.
Coffee with a Cop provides a unique opportunity for community members to ask questions and learn about the Steamboat Springs Police department and its officers. The majority of contact law enforcement with the public happens during emergencies, or emotional situations. As one can understand, those situations are not the most effective time or way to build relationships.
Coffee with a Cop is a national initiative supported by the United States Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. The program aims to advance the practice of community policing through improving relationships between police officers and community members one cup of coffee at a time.
