City of Steamboat Springs Announces STR Lottery

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-November 6, 2023-A lottery will be conducted to award two short-term rental (STR) licenses in the Subzone B1 Sunlight. Interested property owners within Subzone B1 Sunlight must submit a request by December 15, 2023, for their names to be entered in a lottery to establish the order of a waiting list for the available STR licenses. 

“After processing all the valid short-term rental license applications, we discovered only three STR licenses had been issued for this neighborhood,” said Planning and Community Development Director Rebecca Bessey. “Per Ordinance 2890, Subzone B1 Sunlight has a cap of   five STR licenses, giving the city the ability to issue two additional licenses.” 

The STR Lottery is open to all homeowners in Subzone B1 Sunlight. If you own a home in this subzone and are interested in a short-term rental license, visit the city’s webpage on the STR Lottery.

Entries must be submitted online, and all requests must identify:

  • The subject property (property address)
  • ALL property owners
  • Contact information for primary owner (address, phone number, email)

Submissions will be accepted through Friday, December 15, 2023. Requests submitted after December 15, 2023, will not be considered.  

Once the lottery closes and all submissions have been validated, entrants will be assigned a number.  Lottery numbers will be randomly sorted and selected by a neutral, third-party draw service.  All lottery results will be posted online, and city staff will begin contacting property owners in the lottery rank order.

Selected property owners will then have thirty (30) days to submit a complete STR License application. If no conforming application is submitted by 5:00 p.m. MT on the deadline, the property owner shall be removed from the waiting list, and the city shall provide notice to the next property owner on the list of the availability of a license.
