Outdoor Watering Limited to Three Times Per Week

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-May 9, 2023-Even though water is running rampant across the Yampa Valley due to spring runoff, the one place it shouldn’t be flowing freely this season is when you water your lawn over the coming months.

As sprinkler systems start to be programmed across the Yampa Valley, the City of Steamboat Springs and Mt. Werner Water & Sanitation District remind homeowners and landscape contractors that outdoor watering is limited to three times per week.

“A big winter doesn’t bring changes to our watering schedule,” said Michelle Carr, Distribution & Collection Manager. “While we’re fortunate to live where we do, our water is not an unlimited resource. Every drop counts so every step to conserve it ensures it lasts for all of us.”

The watering schedule limits customers to outdoor watering three days per week per the Water Conservation Plan, adopted three years ago. Currently, around 30% of the community’s treated water supplies is applied outdoors to lawns and gardens.

Potable water used for outdoor watering is permitted between 6pm and 10am, and watering days are based on the last number (even or odd) of a customer’s address. There is no outdoor watering on Wednesday.

“This schedule focuses use more efficiently and aids in reducing overall usage across the system,” commented Mt. Werner Water General Manager Frank Alfone. “As we’ve seen over the past several summers, conserving this valuable resource is imperative as we battle years of prolonged drought conditions across the Rocky Mountains.”

Landscape companies, property managers, and individual customers must set sprinkler systems to comply with the schedule. Exceptions to this watering schedule vary slightly between the city and water districts –see your water provider website for information.

The city established an online form to report water waste, which can be found HERE and goes directly to the city’s water team to investigate.
