Howelsen Hill Beach Shines A Lot Brighter
Light Installation Brings Volleyball, Tennis & Pickleball Court Closures
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-September 2, 2022-Beginning on Tuesday, September 6, a project will begin to replace the outdated lights surrounding the Howelsen Beach volleyball, tennis & pickleball courts with a new lighting system that will shine a lot brighter for users.
“We are excited to move forward with this improvement project” commented Recreation Manager Alexis Wolf. “This project has been planned for a decade and the upgrades will provide numerous benefits and energy savings for years to come.”
To perform the work, the Howelsen Beach area will be closed for the remainder of the season starting Tuesday, September 6, and will reopen in the spring of 2023. Crews from Central Electric will be replacing the existing eight lights with six new Musco, energy-efficient, light-emitting diode (LED) lights.
The new lights will provide uniform levels across the venues and incorporate “Night Sky” technology that focuses the light onto the playing surface instead of leaking into surrounding areas.
In addition, the new lights will be on a smart system, allowing for remote access and control, and will turn on instantly as opposed to having to wait 20 minutes to fire up.
“While the season has come to an early close due to the project, the venue will provide a totally new experience when play returns next spring and we truly believe players will see the difference in a new light.” continues Wolf.
For those looking to bump, set, spike and side out this fall, a grass volleyball league is planned through Parks & Recreation’s adult sports program. Additional league information can be found online at steamboatsprings.net/adultsports.
Throughout the project, fencing and closure signs will be in place, and the city asks that you please respect the closure for your safety and the safety of the crews.
