 STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-July 1, 2021-The city has published the preliminary May 2021 sales, use, and accommodation tax report. The May 2021 sales taxes for the City of Steamboat Springs are 37.77% higher compared to the May 2020 collections or an increase of $528,568. 

Last May’s sales tax revenues were adversely affected by the restrictions on short term accommodations. May 2021 collections are 33.59% higher compared to May 2019. For the past 5 years, May collections represent about 5% of annual collections. Year to date sales tax collection is 19.46% more than year to date through May 2020. 

When comparing this May to the same month last year there were notable increases in collections by category are in lodging & amenities, restaurants, and construction & home improvement. Notable increases in collections by area were seen across all geographical areas. 

Accommodation Tax is primarily dedicated to local trail projects. A small amount each year is dedicated towards the marketing of these projects and capital improvements at Haymaker. May collections were up substantially compared to the same period last year. Year to date accommodations tax is up 18.68% compared to the same period last year.

Building Use Tax is used to fund capital projects for the City of Steamboat Springs.  This tax fluctuates depending on building permits issued, use tax audits completed, and the size and number of developments in the City. May net use tax collections total $460,923. Year to date net use tax collections is up 321% through the same period last year.
