STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-September 15, 2020-The City of Steamboat Springs has published the final reports for the July 2020 Sales, Use, Accommodation Tax and the July 2020 Mountain Communities Tax.
July 2020 sales taxes are 4.92% less compared to the July 2019 collections or a decrease of $121,675. For the past 5 years, July collections represent about 9% of annual collections. Year to date sales tax collection is 6.56% less than year to date through July 2019.
When comparing this July to the same month last year, the notable increases in collections by category are reflected in Sporting Goods at 24.82%, Liquor Stores at 20.62%, and Grocery Stores at 7.37% over last July.
Notable increases in collections by area include an increase of 11.16% for Out of Town (new reporting category) and 10.55% for Regional. Previously reported in Regional, Out of Town will now be listed separately and includes businesses that sell direct to customers located in the city via online or other methods.
Out of Town businesses may include Amazon, Home Depot, and the Sign Shop in Frisco, Colorado. Regional includes businesses based in Routt or Moffat County and sell in multiple areas within city limits. Regional business may include utility providers and businesses related to the sharing economy.
Accommodation Tax is primarily dedicated to local trail projects since the Yampa Street improvements portion of referendum 2A was completed last year. A small amount each year is dedicated towards the marketing of these projects and capital improvements at Haymaker. July collections were down 14.03% compared to the same period last year. Year to date accommodations tax is down 16.76% compared to the same period last year.
Building Use Tax is used to fund capital projects for the City of Steamboat Springs. This tax fluctuates depending on building permits issued, use tax audits completed, and the size and number of developments in the City. July net use tax collections total $172,088. Year to date net use tax collections are down 46% through the same period last year.
