STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-April 9, 2020-Tom Leeson has been named to the position of Deputy City Manager for the City of Steamboat Springs announced City Manager Gary Suiter. Leeson will start in his new capacity with the city on Monday, May 18.
“We’re fortunate to have Tom join our team and city,” said City Manager Suiter. “His breadth of experience and knowledge combined with his familiarity with Steamboat Springs will be a significant asset to the community. This is even more important as the city charts its road to recovery from the current pandemic.”
The Deputy City Manager position is a combination of the previously vacated General Service Director that incorporates additional elevated city responsibilities. As second in charge for the city, this position will oversee the city clerk, communications, facilities, information systems, intergovernmental services and the Steamboat Springs Redevelopment Authority and report directly to the City Manager.
With nearly 20 years of experience with public administration, Leeson returns to Steamboat Springs after a decade with the City of Fort Collins, where he most recently served as Community Development and Neighborhood Services Director and prior to that as Redevelopment Program Manager. In these positions, he oversaw more than 80 employees, was responsible for an annual budget of nearly $9M, guided key service areas across the city, and managed significant projects involving multiple government agencies.
While in Steamboat Springs, he held the position of Planning & Community Development Director from 2005 to 2010 as well as Assistant Director, Senior Planner and Planner II for the city. Prior to his time in the Yampa Valley, Leeson began his career as a Planner with the City of Greeley before moving to Clarion Associates, LLC, a national land-use consulting firm.

Leeson received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Massachusetts and holds two master’s degrees from the University of Colorado and University of Maryland. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners and Urban Land Institute; as well as a graduate of the executive leadership program with the Mountain States Employment Council.
