Sales Tax Payments Extended 30 Days

Sales Tax Extension NewsFlash

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-March 19, 2020-In an effort to support local businesses that have been severely impacted by this unprecedented slow-down across the economy, the City of Steamboat Springs will extend payment for February sales tax returns by 30 days. City Council will evaluate further extensions in the future.

“We hope this step will aid small businesses during this critical time,” said Steamboat Springs City Council President Jason Lacy on behalf of the entire council. “We’re all in this together and the city is committed to making its best efforts to help the community through this crisis.”

Beginning with February 2020 sales tax collections, which are due March 20, payments will now be extended to April 20. Returns must still be filed by the regular due date of March 20, but payment of the tax does not need to accompany the paperwork.  This extension applies only to the city’s 4.5% sales tax and accommodation tax 1%.

It’s important to note that a business’ online sales tax returns will continue to show the original due date; however, no penalties or interest will be added so long as payment is made by April 20. The city recommends that any business whose finances allow, please pay sales tax on time instead of waiting.

Businesses with questions or needing additional information should contact the sales tax department. Staff contacts can be found on the Municipal Tax page.
