[ARCHIVED] Yampa River Core Trail Closures

Trail Closure NewsFlash

As temperatures rise and spring runoff increases, Parks & Recreation will begin to close sections of the Yampa River Core Trail and other local trails as needed due to high water and flooding.

Due to the spring runoff, rivers and creeks continue to run high and various sections of the trail will close as water exceeds the banks and floods the trail.  As flows increase and decrease, there will be closures and re-routes on the trail system.

Watch for trail closures at:

  • Highway 40 underpass at Walton Creek
  • Railroad underpass between Fetcher Park and Rotary Park
  • 13th Street underpass at the Bud Werner Memorial Library

These sections and others may open/close as the river reaches peak flows. Please obey all closures, follow the detour routes, and do not try to cross flooded trails.

According to the USGS gauge at the 5th Street Bridge, the Yampa River is flowing at nearly 1,500 cubic feet per second. The river rose steadily since Friday, but has slowed slightly due to the winter storm.  However, water levels are anticipated to start moving up again later this week when warmer temperatures return to the area.
