Reminder to Steamboat Drivers - Yield to Merging Buses

bus_yieldlight.jpg

The City of Steamboat Springs would like to remind all drivers that it is now a law for vehicles to yield when the sign is lit to allow for buses to merge back into traffic from the bus stops. In 2009, Colorado legislators passed the Yield to Bus Law, which is designed to help buses get quickly back into the traffic flow, allowing them to stay on time and on schedule. At that time, the City installed yellow “Yield” lights on the back of the buses which flash on and off when the bus is merging back into traffic.

Denver RTD buses are following suit and will be retrofitting their buses with the “Yield” lights as well. The idea is to help drivers see the flashing light so they have plenty of time to slow down and allow for the bus to merge into the lane. Drivers can be issued a ticket costing between $15 and $100 for failing to allow buses to re-enter traffic.
