The City of Steamboat Springs is set to kick off its 2008 Summer Tran-Spur-tation season on June 8th.

Last year, City employees took part in June’s Bike to Work month. During June of 2007, 282 employees of the City used alternative modes of transportation to commute to work and run errands. Those same employees accounted for 2338 days of alternative transportation use throughout the entire summer. This widespread effort helped to reduce traffic, eliminate pollution, and contribute to a healthier lifestyle.

June is just around the corner and we are expecting bigger and better things from all City employees. The Tran-Spur-tation Committee will be putting up the foam boards again at each building. Employees who bike, walk, take the bus, or carpool to work and those who use alternative modes of transportation to run midday errands will again be asked to put stars next to their name.

Summer Long Goals
City Wide: Increase the percentage of days that City Employees used alternative transportation use. During last year’s Tran-SPUR-tation season, on any given day 11.5% of City employees used alternative modes of transportation during their work day. If City employees can beat last year’s percentage, every building will get a bagel hour at the end of the summer.

Building-by-Building Competition: Each City building will compete against each other in two categories:
(1) building with the highest percentage use of alternative transportation
(2) building with the most improved use from that recorded in 2007
At the end of the summer season, the two buildings that qualify will get a special treat to hopefully accompany the citywide bagel hour.

Regular Individual Raffles
For each recorded use of alternative transportation, the individual employee’s name will be thrown into a hat for a general raffle of new and improved prizes. The most intense users of alternative transportation will have a greater likelihood of winning the raffle, yet every employee who participates will have a chance to win.

Raffles will take place:
(1) every Friday in June
(2) every other Friday in July and August
(3) a grand prize raffle at the end of the summer

Last year, City Hall narrowly edged out the Mountain Fire Station to take the crown for the summer….who wil it be this year?
