SSRA to Begin Second Year of Improvements to Base Area

The second year of the Steamboat Springs Redevelopment Authority’s construction of improvements in the Base Area is gearing up and ready to begin. The main focus for this summer will be the reconstruction of the Après Ski Way—Mt. Werner Circle intersection.

The intersection will be transformed into a roundabout to provide improved traffic flow. This construction will begin on April 21 and is projected to be completed around September 15, 2008.

While all of this construction is happening, dedicated efforts will be made by the project team to maintain continuous and safe access, for both vehicles and pedestrians, within the project area. ....
The roundabout was chosen as the preferred solution to the traffic issues in this area as part of a Mobility Charrette that was held last year. It was acknowledged that the increase in traffic required new traffic control measures.
Turning left off Après Ski Way onto Mt. Werner Circle has been difficult at times in the past. By this fall, the intersection will be a roundabout, greatly improving the left-turns and improving overall traffic flow. With this design, the traffic should also be slowed in the area creating a more village feeling.

The project will also include new sidewalks along Mt. Werner Circle and crosswalks to make pedestrian access much easier. Bike lanes and ramps from the bike lanes to the sidewalks will be installed to provide cyclists the option of using the roundabout or circling the area on the sidewalk. Pedestrian and street lighting will be added to the area with the same flair as the new lights at the Ski Time Square Bus Turnaround. In addition, drainage will be improved in the area with a reconstructed storm sewer system.
Funding for the project is made possible through the Steamboat Springs Redevelopment Authority (SSRA), an urban renewal authority, established in 2005. A portion of the incremental tax proceeds within the SSRA boundary provides the basis for acquiring bonds that finance the improvements.
