Animal Control
About the Department
Animal control consists of two full-time animal control officers who are responsible for enforcing the animal control ordinances. The officers respond to calls of sick and injured animals, dogs at large, and dog bite cases. They handle calls relating to horses, cattle, and vicious animals and prepare daily, monthly, and annual reports of animal control activities. The officers are also responsible for maintaining the animal shelter, along with one full-time and one part-time shelter technicians.

Animal Shelter
The animal shelter reunites owners with lost pets, finds unwanted animals loving homes, issues yearly dog and cat licensing, and also provides crematorium services. The shelter benefits from volunteers provided by the Northwest Animal Assistance League and Routt County Humane Society.

As a result of the city furloughs, there will be no shelter staff on duty after 5:00 pm from Monday to Thursday. The Routt County Humane Society volunteers will still keep the shelter open until 5:30 pm in an effort to make the changes as convenient as possible.
