The Steamboat Springs Volunteer Fire Department was established in 1898 and is part of the City's Department of Public Safety Services. During the past several years, the Steamboat Springs Rural Fire Protection District had an agreement with The City of Steamboat Springs for fire protection services in exchange for EMS services to the city. Beginning in 2002, The Steamboat Springs Rural Fire Protection District merged with the Steamboat Springs Fire Department. The resulting merger meant becoming a combination department instead of the historical volunteer department. The department was restructured because EMS and fire suppression are now the department's responsibility. In addition, the Fire Marshall's office (Fire Prevention) reports directly to the Assistant Chief.

Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue became a combination department with full-time paid staff and firefighters/paramedics or EMTs as well as part-time and volunteer firefighters. Structural and wildland fire suppression, emergency medical services, and high and low angle rope rescue services are provided. The department has divisions of Administration, Suppression, Public Education and Fire Prevention (Fire Marshall's office).
