Historic Preservation Commission

The Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) conducts monthly meetings where it considers requests for design review, reviews nominations of buildings for listing on the City of Steamboat Springs Register of Historic Places, recommendations to City Council on preservation related topics, recommends on National Register nominations, and conducts review and approval of Colorado State Income Tax Credits for qualified restorations. These duties and other public projects form the foundation for responsible preservation planning.

The Historic Preservation Commission, originally called the Historic Preservation Advisory Commission(HPAC), was created in 1999 and charged with the mission to preserve and enhance Steamboat Springs' unique historic, cultural, and architectural heritage. In February 2009, a new Historic Preservation ordinance was adopted by the Steamboat Springs City Council. Under this new ordinance, the Historic Preservation Commission (or HPC) members are appointed by City Council and serve without pay. The Commission meets to review project proposals for conformance with the Design Guidelines. HPC makes recommendations to the property owners and other reviewing entities.

Do I need HPC approval for my project?

Additions and alterations to buildings that are eligible to an historic register (local, state or national) require some sort of Historic Preservation review. Small additions or alterations that are in conformance with the Design Guidelines and the Community Development Code may be reviewed administratively. Larger projects must be reviewed by the HPC at a public meeting. Some projects will also require review and approval of the Planning Commission or the Board of Adjustments.
