Incentives for Historic Preservation in Steamboat Springs

Many incentives for restoration and preservation of historic properties, buildings, and structures exist in Steamboat Springs.  Incentives can provide recognition or can bring financial benefits for qualified restoration or preservation projects.  Most incentives require some form of historic register designation of a property.  For more information on which properties are listed on the Colorado and National Historic Registers, contact the Colorado Historical Society's Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation .  The City of Steamboat Springs recently adopted a new local Steamboat Springs Register of Historic Places. COLORADO STATE AND FEDERAL TAX CREDITS

CITY OF STEAMBOAT SPRINGS INCENTIVES

Sales Tax Rebate:
Eligibility: For properties on the Steamboat Springs Register of Historic Places. Call the City's Division of Historic Preservation at 879-2060.

Scope: Renovation work carried out in accordance with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Treatment of Historic Properties. Work must be approved by the City of Steamboat Springs' Historic Preservation Commission (HPC), and City staff.

Benefit: Rebate at the end of the project on all City of Steamboat Springs sales tax paid on materials used for renovation.

Waiver of Planning Fees:
Eligibility: For properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Colorado State Register of Historic Properties or the Steamboat Springs Register of Historic Places.

Scope and Benefit: Waiver of Planning Department permit fees for work consistent with the City's Historic Preservation Design Guidelines and the Secretary of the Interior's Standards. Approved by Historic Preservation staff.

Variances:
Eligibility: For properties over 50 years old. Property does not need to be listed on an historic register.

Scope and Benefit: Possible zoning relief (a variance criterion) on projects that preserve character-defining features of historic buildings.
