In 1980, the Steamboat Springs Area Fire Protection District was established and cooperated with the Steamboat Springs Volunteer Fire Department to provide primarily ambulance/EMS services while the SSVFD provided fire and rescue services.
Beginning in 2002, the Steamboat Springs Area Fire Protection District merged with the Steamboat Springs Volunteer Fire Department. The resulting merger meant becoming a combination department instead of the historical volunteer department. With the merger, the department was restructured to provide EMS, fire suppression, fire prevention and public education services and became Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue (SSFR).
