Sober Prom

Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue’s Sober Prom program is a shift away from the usual mock drunk driving accident and what will happen to those who drink and drive and emphasizes what will happen to the people they love. It is made clear to the students that it is their families and friends who suffer and pay for their poor judgment.

The program asks the students involved to share the memories they would hold dear, the small things they would cherish and the things they would have done different, and the things they would never have the chance to do because of this tragic event.

As students take part in a series of events that make up Sober Prom, the repercussions of drunk driving and the finality of death sink in, as they never could in a different kind of demonstration, short of a real fatality.

It is the goal of the Sober Prom program to shift the student’s me-centered mentality to a broader focus on the very real and far-reaching consequences that individual action can have.
