Tip of the Week

  • "Hold fire drills with all family members at least once a year. This will test the effectiveness of your plan and give you a chance to practice escaping."
  • Sponsored by Local Fire Prevention Partners

Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue has participated in educating our community about wildland fire and creating defensible space for your home in the event of a wildland fire.

Proactive steps can lead to a safer environment for you, your home and your family in the event of a wildland fire.

  • Fire Prevention Week

Nationwide, one week out of the year is dedicated to fire prevention.

Safety Seat Inspections - New Law in Effect!

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration tells us that half of the child car seats in use today are installed incorrectly without parents realizing it. Nationally over 1,000 children under age 10 die and 160,000 are injured each year as passengers in motor vehicles. The lives of you and your family could depend on using seat belts and child car seats correctly.

The Steamboat Springs Fire Department has several trained "Safety Seat Technicians" on the department to help ensure that your child is properly restrained. Complementary inspections are offered every Wednesday between the hours of 10:00 am and 1:00 pm. Please email or call 879-0700 for an appointment or more information.

Remember children under the age of 12 should never ride in the front seat of a car with a passenger air bag.

If you are in need of additional information check out the Colorado Child Passenger Safety site or the NHTSA web site.

Check out the following flyers pertaining to child safety seat laws in our state:

  • Child Safety Seat Laws (English)
  • Child Safety Seat Laws (Spanish)
  • Sober Prom Program

Annually the Steamboat Springs Fire Department in conjunction with the Steamboat Springs High School produces a Sober Prom Program to encourage high school students to not drink and drive.

    Smoke Detector Program

The Steamboat Springs Fire Department realizes that properly installed and operating smoke detectors in a home can provide a valuable early warning to occupants in the event of a fire. The department offers a free smoke detector and installation to anyone who is unable or would like more information on home safety. To schedule an installation or to request a detector contact the fire station.

    Juvenile Firesetting Program

The Steamboat Springs Fire Department is concerned about children who play with fire. This problem requires the attention of all adults, parents, teachers, and safety officials. The "Juvenile Firesetter Program" educates children and adults about the dangerous consequences of playing with fire. If you suspect that your child is participating in fire play, contact the Steamboat Springs Fire Department for help.

    CPR Classes

The Steamboat Springs Fire Department offers a basic "Heart Saver" class to all Steamboat Springs High School juniors and seniors. For more information on obtaining your CPR certification, contact Colorado Mountain College at 870-4444.

    Station Tours

All station tours are done by the volunteers and therefore require a two-week advance notice. To be put on the schedule contact the fire station.

Alive at 25/ Alive at 25 Parents

Alive at 25 is a highly interactive 4 1/2 hour course encourages young drivers and passengers to take responsibility for their behavior. This program focuses on decision-making, responsibility and risk assessment. The instructor guides students to come to their own conclusions on why young drivers are at such a high risk. The students formulate their own ideas as to what they can do to reduce their exposure to those risks. Finally, they learn the different types of consequences and how their choices behind the wheel affect others.

The Alive at 25 Parent Program is intended to assist families in understanding and managing their teens (young/novice drivers) through the learning-to-drive process. This is a good program that compliments the Alive at 25 Program by targeting the parents and providing them with the same information the new drivers are learning in Alive at 25.

    Attitudinal Dynamics Of Driving (ADOD)

The Defensive Driving Course – Attitudinal Dynamics Of Driving is designed as an instructional intervention course for repeat traffic offenders, non DWI/DUI. During the DDC-ADD course, participants are actively involved in evaluating their driving habits and making decisions and choices about their driving behaviors. Participants involvement is necessary to the success of this course.
