Director of Public Works
The City of Steamboat Springs, nestled in the mountains of northwest Colorado and located in Routt County 160 miles northwest of Denver seeks its next Director of Public Works. Steamboat Springs is a vibrant community and home to 12,000 permanent residents. In the winter season, the population can swell to over 30,000 with visiting skiers, riders and winter enthusiasts. The City encompasses just over ten square miles and is surrounded by beautiful mountain vistas, ranch land, wilderness areas, state parks, reservoirs and lakes. These public lands provide recreational areas for hiking, biking, boating, hunting, fishing and water recreation and are also used for sustainable grazing and logging.
The City of Steamboat Springs is seeking a progressive, highly collaborative public works executive to serve as its next Public Works Director. The position reports to the City Manager. The Public Works Department has 64 full-time and 13 part-time positions and a $20.3 million budget. The Department is full service and included the following divisions: Engineering, Streets, Fleet, Water/Sewer Utilities, Wastewater Treatment, Transit and Airport.
The next Public Works Director shall meet the following requirements:
•High integrity and a positive track record in customer services, team building within the department and with other departments, and experience with shared services, service consolidation and joint bidding;
•Bachelor’s degree with major coursework in public or business administration or closely related field;
•7 – 10 years increasingly responsible experience in executive level public works in the public sector or in a field closely related to the public sector;
•Strong oral and written skills, strategic planning abilities and a demonstrated enthusiasm for working with elected and appointed officials, employees, consultants, contractors and the public;
•Thorough knowledge of street operations, maintenance and snow removal, water and sewer utilities and familiar with transit and airport operations;
•Thorough knowledge of business operations, budgeting and labor practices;
•Skilled in the use of basic office software (MS Office Suite, GIS is a plus)
Salary is $73,954 - $98,780 DOQ. Salary range is based on a 4-day, 36 hour work week. Benefits include medical, dental and life insurance, vehicle allowance, paid time off, wellness program and retirement plan.
