[ARCHIVED] October 2020 Final Sales Tax Report

The city has published the Final October 2020 sales, use, and accommodation tax report. The October 2020 sales taxes for the City of Steamboat Springs are 18.55% more compared to the October 2019 collections or an increase of $328,382. For the past 5 years, October collections represent about 6% of annual collections. Year to date sales tax collection is 1.65% less than year to date through October 2019. 

When comparing this October to the same month last year, all categories saw increases except for Utilities. The notable increases in collections by category are in Marijuana at 38.75%, Lodging & Amenities at 34.31%, and Liquor Stores at 32.43% over last October. 

Notable increases in collections by area include an increase of 55.04% for Out of Town and 24.21% for West Steamboat. Previously reported in Regional, Out of Town will now be listed separately and includes businesses that sell direct to customers located in the city via online or other methods. Out of Town businesses may include Amazon, Home Depot, and a Sign Shop in Frisco, Colorado or another independent business. Regional includes businesses based in Routt or Moffat County and sell in multiple areas within city limits. Regional business may include utility providers and businesses related to the sharing economy. 

Accommodation Tax is primarily dedicated to local trail projects. A small amount each year is dedicated towards the marketing of these projects and capital improvements at Haymaker. October collections were up 34.32% compared to the same period last year. Year to date accommodations tax is down 10.10% compared to the same period last year.

Building Use Tax is used to fund capital projects for the City of Steamboat Springs.  This tax fluctuates depending on building permits issued, use tax audits completed, and the size and number of developments in the City. October net use tax collections total $37,813. There will be additional revenue for October that will book in November due to some timing issues. Year to date net use tax collections are down 39% through the same period last year.
