August Final Sales Tax Report

Sales Tax - April 2020

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-October 15, 2020-The city has published the Final August 2020 sales, use, and accommodation tax report. The August 2020 sales taxes for the City of Steamboat Springs are 2.11% more compared to the August 2019 collections or an increase of $47,247. For the past 5 years, August collections represent about 9% of annual collections. Year to date sales tax collection is 5.42% less than year to date through August 2019. 

When comparing this August to the same month last year, the notable increases in collections by category are reflected in Liquor Stores at 22.05%, Lodging and Amenities at 12.76% and Grocery Stores at 10.17% over last August. 

Notable increases in collections by area include an increase of 23.23% for Out of Town (new reporting category) and 18.80% for Regional. Previously reported in Regional, Out of Town will now be listed separately and includes businesses that sell direct to customers located in the city via online or other methods. 

Out of Town businesses may include Amazon, Home Depot, and the Sign Shop in Frisco, Colorado. Regional includes businesses based in Routt or Moffat County and sell in multiple areas within city limits. Regional business may include utility providers and businesses related to the sharing economy. 

Accommodation Tax is primarily dedicated to local trail projects since the Yampa Street improvements portion of referendum 2A was completed last year. A small amount each year is dedicated towards the marketing of these projects and capital improvements at Haymaker. August collections were up 12.03% compared to the same period last year. Year to date accommodations tax is down 14.37% compared to the same period last year.

Building Use Tax is used to fund capital projects for the City of Steamboat Springs.  This tax fluctuates depending on building permits issued, use tax audits completed, and the size and number of developments in the City. August net use tax collections total $288,692. Year to date net use tax collections are down 37% through the same period last year.
