STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO- March 25, 2020-At approximately 8:30am this morning, Steamboat Springs Police Department (SSPD) officers responded to a report of a vehicle stolen from Curve Plaza, the shopping area adjacent to the intersection of US Highway 40 (US40) and Elk River Road (CO129).
A short time later, the stolen vehicle was located eastbound on US40 and when officers initiated a traffic stop, the driver failed to yield. The pursuit proceeded east on US40 toward Rabbit Ears Pass. Once the vehicle left city limits, SSPD officers discontinued the pursuit.
Deputies with the Routt County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO) later located the vehicle on US40. The driver again failed to yield to the traffic stop and headed westbound on US 40.
RCSO deputies pursued the vehicle to the Steamboat II neighborhood before apprehending the suspect. Sang Hoon Ok, 44 from California, was taken into custody without further incident. No injuries were reported, and no vehicles were damaged.
Hoon Ok is being charged with Aggravated Motor Vehicle Theft in the First Degree (Felony 5), Vehicular Eluding (Felony 5), and Reckless Driving (Misdemeanor 2).
“It is tempting to leave your car running, whether to let it warm up or run a quick errand inside, but it does create an opportunity for theft” said Commander Annette Dopplick “Secure your vehicle; it is a simple step you can take to prevent the theft of your car or truck.”
All criminal charges are merely accusations and that the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
