4 STAR NewsFlash

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-January 3, 2020-The City of Steamboat Springs was recently recertified at a 4 STAR level for Cities and Communities program at the U.S. Green Building Council. The city is part of a growing group to be certified for Cities and Communities across the country.

“We’re proud to have attained the 4 STAR community rating for a second time,” said City Manager Gary Suiter. “We’re committed to creating healthy, sustainable places that people love to live in and visit from around the globe.”

The city received a final score of 606.66 in the STAR Community Rating System and earned the 4 STAR Community level. When the community first underwent certification in 2016, the city scored a 446.0 and earned a 4 STAR rating level. At that time, Steamboat Springs was the second community in Colorado and 49th nationwide to achieve certification.

Steamboat Springs achieved certification for implementing practical and measurable strategies and solutions aimed at improving sustainability and the standard of living for residents. The program is designed to help buildings, communities and cities achieve high performance in key areas of human and environmental health.

“The work of cities and communities such as Steamboat Springs is a driving force in ensuring a more sustainable future for all,” said Mahesh Ramanujam, president and CEO, USGBC. “Cities and communities that achieve certification are lowering carbon emissions, creating a healthier environment and striving to improve the quality of life for their residents. Steamboat Springs is setting a standard for what it means to be a high performer and their efforts and achievements should be an example for all.”

The program enables communities to measure and track outcomes and are evaluated against key metrics that include energy, water, waste, transportation, education, health, safety, prosperity and equitability. Steamboat Springs joins a global network of more than 100 certified cities and communities.

LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, was created by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and is the world’s most widely used green building rating system. LEEDS took over the STAR Communities program, combining both programs into one.
