History -- City Council Presentations

The idea of a new police facility was discussed at nine regular City Council meetings. To view the information presented, click on the meeting date listed below.

Background Information

The history of the current facility and space needs assessments for a police facility can be found on the history and background page.

A volunteer Police Facility Committee was appointed to assist with the process of identifying a preferred location for the new Police Facility. Location Criteria

Over the past two years, numerous properties have been investigated as possible locations for the police facility. Features for an optimal site include:

  • Centrally located from a service and response perspective
  • 1 to 3 acres of land
  • Ability to contain costs within the proposed $8.9 million budget
  • Site analysis also takes into consideration:
    • Site work costs
    • Utility locations
    • Capacity for two access points
    • Topography and soil conditions
    • Ready access to US Highway 40
    • Neighborhood characteristics

Public Comment from Police Station Tours

Steamboat Springs Police conducted tours of the Yampa Street facility every Thursday in March of 2013. Participants were invited to leave their comments at the conclusion of their tour. To read a summary of those comments, view the Survey Results (PDF).
